Everyone is correct about not trying it for intermediate... It
would take too long. The whole idea behind it is to get more flying time
for Sportsman pilots. When I started flying pattern, I passed on flying
Sportsman and started in Intermediate, simply because I wasn't about to drive
350-500 miles to fly for 20 minutes.... Also, it's good exposure
for the Sportsman pilot to get as much flying time as possible in front of
judges... They get a lot of feedback and support from the judges and
fellow flyers that they may well not get at there home field...

You learn more flying in a contest than you ever do just practicing
without observers. So far, it's worked very well here in D8. We
normally only get 3 rounds per day any how.... To tell you the
truth, I don't believe we've had any issue on 2 day vs 1 day contests.
We always run a 2 day contest and the Sportsman get 12 rounds of
flying... They like it!

Lance: It IS workable, we have been doing it for the better
part of 20
years. Not for ALL classes, just Sportsman.
We make sure
this class gets 4 rounds each day, weather permitting, of
course. We
announce a winner Saturday night at the dinner, and present
the award. In
2005, for our 50th, we even gave away a gold watch to each
day's winners.
In this case, we stipulated that the same person could not
win both days.
The guy who won Saturday opted not to fly Sunday, but was
there
anyway.

You seem to missing the point that we are trying to
encourage
participation in the lower class, classes. We are doing this by
trying to
address the problem of committment for the newcomer. It does
work, and is
workable, if the CD looks at "how can we make it work" and
NOT at "how is
this a problem".

Terry T.

On Sun, 1 Oct 2006
