One day contests really require a large number of potential flyers
within a reasonably short driving distance. I think that they were
more popular years ago when there were more people in pattern. In the
80's on the East coast there were lots of flyers and several one day
contests. Today, we have people driving 400 -500 miles to a 2 day
contest and that would not be good for a one day event. However if you
had enough local people to make up for the loss of the long distance
drivers maybe it would work. I just don't know of too many areas that
have enough people local to make up an event and not have to rely on
long distance drivers to guarantee a good contest with lots of
competition.
I would like some one day contests too, but not if I am only flying
against 1 or 2 other guys.

I had this exact conversation today at my local field. Two-day contests
seem to appeal to the die hard who don't mind traveling. One-day contests
appeal to the local guys who are "on the fence" or have other time demands
on the weekends (like me). I would love a one day event with 5 rounds.

I am sure that there have been a couple times when a Sportsman pilot was
not able to stay for both days, but I can't remember any specifically. We
have been offering this for a number of years now, and to the best of my
memory, everyone has stayed for both days.

For a one day event to be appealing it has to be within a reasonable
driving
distance. That reduces your pilot pool to those within a two or
three hour
radius, excepting of course the truly dedicated. For some areas that
isn't a
factor but for the rest of country that is little help.
Sayre has always done two one day events for sportsman and from the
few I
have been to the numbers rarely varied much over the consecutive
days. I am
sure Terry can elaborate on this.
Other than the quantity of food and displacing the home club it is
really
not any more work to do a two day event.

The idea of a 2 day contest is a big commitment for me.
We have 3 children under 5 years old and my wife is a stay
at home mom. The only break she gets is on the weekends
when I am around to help.
I have a hard time asking her to watch the kids all weekend
while I go fly and babysitters can be hit and miss.
A one day contest would be wonderful for someone in my
situation, however I have no idea if this would work or draw
more contestants?
