Very Good question but until there is a standard system to indicate motor size, Use Watts of the motor to determine what size you need. For scale applications your motor should produce about 100 Watts per pound of aircraft weight, 150-200 for Pattern aircraft, and at least 200 Watts per pound for 3D. The motor and controller should state the wattage it can handle and the size and types of batteries used to get the power (Watts) you will need for your application.

So an 11 lb aircraft (max for Pattern) should have a motor/controller/battery that produces at least 1,650 Watts and for FAI 2,200 Watts. This is what I have read in magazines and what I have been told by my friends at Atlanta Hobbies, an Electric power specialist.

Do your research and ask a lot of questions. Hacker C-50 is the norm for pattern right now, but there are a lot of new motors and controllers on the way and battery technology is jumping ahead leaps and bounds. Find something that you like and works for you, I am.
