<DIV>In my view, I saw no study done by the AMA looking at rates of occurences of these model types, per capita, or the degree of damage of those occurences to property owners. I saw therefore, no basis for AMA's suggested charge for bringing this faction of Aeromodeling into the whole of AMA. 30 dollars seems inappropriate considering the damage potential especially when one considers the new battery technology. But a larger amount seems difficult to swallow for models that cost only a couple hundred bucks in general.</DIV>

<DIV>Having said that, I agree that the AMA must do something to help protect these pilots (many of whom may be inexperienced and are potentially quite dangerous to themselves and others). Considering how the manufacturers have embraced (they, afterall created it) this extremely fast growing part of the Hobby, they need to help AMA by bringing the AMA message to those that have no knowledge of the possible dangers and potential insurance required. Some are doing some minor things (Horizon is one example) but more must be done.</DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I believe it is up to the city or local government to limit or regulate what is done on public/government property and parks. City and county officials are becoming more aware of the R/C buzz and they understand what the liabilities are if one was to injure an innocent bystander. Our club has been approached by one of the local cities to actually help establish an area where R/C activity could occur. Their thinking is if a local club could help control frequencies and provide a safety net with AMA's insurance and guidelines then it would be more beneficial to them to help organize an area to fly small park and glider type aircraft then let people fly anywhere they choose. Granted... with the new spread spectrum technology there wont be as much of a frequency problem but older radios will still be around for quite some time and the liability issue is still there.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV>This is what happened at 7 pm eastern time tonight. I built a Formosa electric formy, so I can fly it at a city park near where I live ( Rochester, Michigan). This is my 3rd fly (2 previous flies during early morning at the weekend and no body was there), but this is the1st time I brought my 4-year-old daughter with me. She was very anxious to watch daddy fly. Right before I took off, a park worker rushed over and stopped me. She told me no model airplane is allowed to fly in the park. I requested to see a written document, and she showed me an old park flier with some regulations. I went to see her boss and he told me the same story. I showed them how safe the formy plane was plus my AMA card and a local club pilot license. He insisted that it is the city law and anything flies with RC is not allowed. So, we left and my daughter cried all the way home.</DIV>
