The problem I encounter with HVLP guns is
that they need more compressor that what most people have and while it is a hi
volume low pressure it moves a lot of material thru it making a wider spray
pattern (waste for most of the trim lines) and since the things we paint are
small most of it becomes over spray. It is true that you use it at
a lower PSI but it still moves a lot of CFM's thru it. Don't get me wrong,
they work great just for bigger applications in my opinion.

Painting

I have been using a Harbor Freight HVLP touch-up gun for painting my models
with PPG Concept paints. They work great. The one I use comes with
a pressure regulator. I have an in line moisture eliminator (desicant
type) that I also bought from Harbor Freight. So far after painting some
ten planes, the gun works fine. I do break down the gun after each
painting session and clean the needle, spray nozzle and interior of the gun
area where the paint enters from the cup.

One word of caution. Eventhough the spray gun is HLVP, the overspary
gets on everything. I paint outside under my breezeway. It is a
good idea to wear at least a air mask. I use the cartridge type.
Also don't let your cars be down wind of the spray fumes. One of my cars
was parked some 50 foot away and still managed to get some overspray on
it.

secret is in the paint. Concept is so good you can do a great job
even
with a cheap external mix airbrush like the the one Harbor freight
puts on
sale for less than $5. If you use one of those make sure you
regulate the
air pressure to 20 pounds or less. Practice on old milk jugs
and plastic
containers. The down side is that you will have to hurry with
the airbrush
but the small paint container will help you keep the weight
down. The paint
will weigh the same in the can as it does on the
airplane.
Don't get the idea you can sand Concept off and do it again.
Sanding Concept
is something to avoid!

John Ferrell
<A
