I do a similar thing.  Tin the plug, tin the wire letting the solder really
soak in.  Then Reflow the solder by pressing the wire to the plug with the
flat of the soldering iron, the solder remelts and sinks quickly onto the
plug, remove the iron and you have a rock-solid connection.
