[NSRCA-discussion] Plettenberg Advance 30-10 ESC - Questions

There is a critical rpm for maximum braking effect and the slowest downline speed with a given prop.  Slower rpm will result in a faster downline.  Higher rpm will result in a faster downline.  Rough example.....a single blade electric idling at 500 rpm with peak rpm of 6K.....the prop can wind up to 3 or 4K in a long downline without specific ("drag") braking or governing.Regards, DaveSent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note8.Apologies in advance for any typos undoubtedly introduced by auto correct and / or talk to text.

I thought a free turning prop generated more drag than one that was restrained from turning freely.

Excellent explanation. I have been flying the d3 for a bit now and really enjoying the consistency in downline braking.

Gents - here is my new(er) to electric perspective on the ESC choice for an out runner:  Plett and Himax.

Fresh off running engines All this time I’ll compare it to the two cycle versus four cycle debate.  After crashing my Axion /YS setup, I decided to buy Jerry’s BJ Incitation with Plett ADV setup so I could get into a more modern plane, and thought
I would convert it to YS at some point.

I basically went with the OS/Futaba controller right away.  Despite trying numerous props, the “flight envelope” was not totally in control.   It was lacking the down line and exit speed control offered by the YS -  but ran exceptional in all
other aspects.   Pleased enough, I bought a second Invitation from Paul, with Himax, and also installed an OS controller, noting identical performance observations.   Overall great, but even with brake set at 90%, there is a freewheeling of the prop that cannot
 be dealt with.

This is EXACTLY analogous to the 2-cycle versus 4- Cycle debate, with the Outrunner being the 2-cycle, and the Contras being the 4-cycle.   Until the greatest advancement in speed controllers came out:  The D3.

The D3 controller will turn your single prop outrunner (2-cycle’ish), into a perfectly tuned YS 4-cycle, every flight.   The D3 will not let the prop spin or freewheel or over speed at all - it is eliminated.   It’s unbelievable different and
the flight envelope becomes 100% in control all the time:

Down lines slower and the plane “decelerates” as it should in an exit radius.  Even landing speed and approach more under control.   Perhaps my friends that have seen it fly before and after will chime in, but there is a tru visible difference
in the flight profile.  That’s my observations, and it really light!!

Thank You,
Jim

This is from Davis Snow regarding the Graupner ESC.
This is what he's found. Dave runs these esc's in his Helis at 12S also.

Mike, as far as I know there are no limitations on the Graupner esc concerning the brake unlike the issues of running the brake over 30% for the CC. The Graupner actually has a dynamic
break from the limited few weeks I flew it last year. Once the brake is engaged it appeared that the lower one lowered the low end the higher the break percentage would be.  I only flew the esc after the NATs last year for a few weeks and at first I did not
realise it was changing the break the lower I lowered the low end. This might be good or bad feature but I'm sure someone would be able to make good use of it. I had no issues with temperatures and it seemed like the Pyro 600 motor for the contra ran much
better. I think it will work well with the Pletty or any other current motor out there.

Is there any limitation on the Graupner brake settings?

Guys, I really appreciate all the feedback and experience with the equipment. I have had some offline e-mails, text, and a couple phone
 calls.

Short summary is people have had, or are having, success with a wide range of ESCs. I haven’t been told by anyone to stay away from a
brand, just some differences in strengths/weakness.

I hope to be ordering from F3A Unlimited by the end of the month, assuming I’m called back to work by then. Been on Furlough since April
6th, no call today so it will be at least another week.

Guys many customers use Castle on a Pletty Advance but in the last few years less and less. Sales of CC related items are probably down 80% on their units versus 5 years ago.

Graupner is very popular as well as Jeti.

And for those thinking Graupner is done. Wait a few weeks. We're back.

My issues with CC is the braking or lack of.

It's never been up to snuff with others on the market.

Also I like a BEC feature in the Graupner HV80 non opto. It makes for a slick easy to use redundant system.

But hey whatever floats your boat is Saul Goodman.

I have used the Pletty advance with a Castle HV80 in two pattern ships for years.  I can send you my program if you like Larry

Larry

I just went thru this for Brandon with his new Andes . He also has flown HIMAX and Edge 80 HV   Now he is flying Pletty with 120 Edge HV Lite – I spoke to Castle about amp draws,
airflow. Airflow is critical for all. However with the 120 lite running at 75 amps most times and bumping up to 90 amps for intermittent use
Airflow on the Edge 120 HV Lite is not an issue. Also it is 8 grams lighter than the Edge 80 amp HV.

Zero concern for a Castle 80HV at 100 Amps for pattern use.  I use the lite version and is also fine but needs to have good cooling

Subject: [NSRCA-discussion] Plettenberg Advance 30-10 ESC - Questions

I’m getting ready to build an Alchemy and committed to buying another plane that should arrive late August/early September, and will have it built/delivered RTF. Both will get
a new Plettenberg Advance 30-10. I’ve purchased the Pletty for both planes already.

This is a big change for me as I have been flying a Himax 6330-210 Pro w/ a Castle HV80 ESC since 2011. This set up has been reliable for me, but I am ready for a change.

I really like the Castle ESCs, but I don’t want to fight the Pletty. Also I have seen some data that the Pletty can pull up around 90+ Amps based on some posts I have read on
various forums. I don’t know if it is normal for a Pletty to be over 80 Amps.

What is the preferred ESC for the Pletty?
What settings for the ESC?
How is your Throttle Curve set up? I have a Futaba 18sz.

I will likely be flying a Falcon 3 blade 19  x 13.5    to   20 x 12.5

Best Regards,
