If you give a 10% (or whatever) increase in score for a 1.75m plane, someone will come up with a 1.75m plane that is designed specifically to fit the rules but be as close to a 2M plane as possible.  So if you want to be competitive in sportsman, everyone must buy this ‘new improved specialty plane so they have a chance.  

Now instead of being able to buy a used 2M plane at a big discount, you have to spent a few thousand dollars to have the right plane,,,,how has that helped?

I have experience in drag racing and I can tell you rule changes about equipment cost you money, because you now have to get the latest/greatest to take advantage of those rules.

What is good about pattern is that the pilot is WAY more important than the equipment (within reason)
