John,
I think you have hit on the real issue, at least as far as I am concerned. In my case, it's actually time, not money. I haven't flown pattern for almost 15 years. When I did my competition abilities were slightly above average at best. I always had the latest equipment, flying the latest Hyde release, newest YS, and the latest JR equipment every year. To be competitive required me to fly almost every day. I remember using 30 gallons of fuel a year. As I get older, time is more of an issue than money. All of the time practicing and going to contest, is time away from your family. And, they really don't understand toy airplanes. I wish the hobby, and the people in all the best. During my pattern experience, I met some of the finest people on this earth. I also learned more than I thought possible.
