[NSRCA-discussion] Castle settings

Amps or watts alone is not really a good indicator of performance.  Prop RPM is the real indicator of performance.
Castle, and most modern ESCs use dynamic timing....they monitor motor performance and advance timing as appropriate.  With Castle, even on low timing, it can reach max advance of 24 degrees.  Setting Castle for low, medium, or high timing adjusts how aggressively the esc tries to advance the timing.
I believe with Jeti, and others, setting a numeric value for timing is setting the maximum advance.... It is not necessarily fixing the timing at that specific advance.
If the timing is advanced, and the RPM does not increase, the amp draw likely has increased and the motor will run hotter (as will the esc and lipo) without any real benefit.
With Castle, outrunner mode for PWM allows the esc to switch the PWM frequency based on what the ESCs "sees" monitoring the motor operation.  It may be running at 8, 12, 16, or 24khz, and switching depending on rpm, load, etc.  I have seen some instances where pattern outrunners run quieter, with less whistling / humming using OR, but, it is quite rare and actual performance change is neglible..... But the esc usually runs a little hotter.

Dave

Thanks Joe, how much current are you getting?

Dale, Castle told one of my buddies to use 8 kHz instead of Outrunner which you have. I found a 21.5X13 to be a better prop choice and I have moved on to TP 6000 packs.

I did have the logging off. Just ran the motor with 8 kHz, the current went up to 67 A, which is a 10% improvement. I do know I can get well over 80A with the Mezon ESC, although no need for that much. What should I  expect
with the Castle? I am using a Falcon 21x13.5 prop, TP 5000 pack.

So just to add my experience. Check to see if logging is enabled on the ESC. If it is turn it off. I had a problem similar to this on this same esc and found out that logging on this esc drags it down.

Maybe I should let Mark Atwood speak for himself, but he's kinda busy right now...

Mark told me he tried everything he could think of and couldn't get a Pletty Advance to run full power on a Castle ESC. He recommended the Jetti or O.S.  I got the O.S. and it works fine.

V4.22, Low timing but is set on Outrunner Mode not 8khz…could that be it?  Not sure why but thought I had read that the Advance works best in this mode?

Will check if that fixes it as soon as I can.

What are the other settings?

Specifically check -
Software is 4.22, or higher
Low timing
8khz pwm

And.... All solder joints and connectors are healthy.

Possibly try reloading software...not likely to help, but it might.

I have an Edge 80 HV Esc, Plettenberg Advance motor. I usually need around 70-75 A to get good performance, but I can’t get more than 60A from this one. I’ve recalibrate the throttle (fixed end points) but no improvement. Wondering if there is some other setting
 causing this?

Thanks,

Dale
