[NSRCA-discussion] 2017 Nats Contest Format

No slight against Mike for all the hard work being done, but I concur with Jon’s comment. It feels like we’ve taken a left turn on how this is being run. We purposely have the ED work a year as an Asst ED for a year to learn the ropes and mitigate a lot of format issues. Al has proven himself in that regard and was selected as the ED for that experience and his success in running our prior nats.

I’m concerned that this format could actually go against our AMA rule book with regard to Masters especially (as it doesn’t lay out the circumstances for a matrix approach should we have that many competitors.)

I’m also concerned that as it stands now, we’ll have ONE loser in both FAI and Masters (there are 11 in each group currently registered) which seems unnecessarily cold.

Lastly, and this is horribly cynical, but the idea of an afternoon FAI finals, flying unknowns….well, I’m guessing by afternoon they wouldn’t be all that “unknown” anymore.

Mike, I support the venue change and all the things that it’s trying to embrace. But I think beyond that, we need to let Al run the event as his experience dictates. Change is good, but too much change creates chaos.

My $0.02

-Mark

Hmm, this sounds like an ED decision with concurrence by the NSRCA board, and, with all due respect, Mike is not the ED. Al Glenn is, last I heard. He is responsible for conduct and format of the contest, along with judging decisions. Sounds like Al has not been part of the decision process. And it doesn't sound like the NSRCA board has either.

In addition, NATs trophy decisions on depth of awards (i.e. how many places in each class) are made by AMA based on numbers of entries in each class prior to the first cutoff date. This is for everything except Sportsman. The above is per the letter from AMA included with the registration forms.

If the above is not the case, please correct me.

Jon
