This is exactly the same issue the we as modelers have had with park
flyers. They didn't join AMA, didn't get help from clubs or hobby shops,
flew where they pleased, ran into things and did a lot crashing.
However, the potential for damage was an order of magnitude less without
the capabilities and technology built into the "drones". Also, the
general public was not up in arms about peeking in bedroom windows, the
government about drones in airport approach paths, crashes in stadiums,
flying up into controlled airspace, etc.
You could say that the AMA didn't examine the history of the park flyers
prior to promoting drones and should have but hindsight is always
easier. Also the AMA has a history of trying to throw a tent over
everything to do with modeling which I think most would consider a good
idea.

Where were all the objections when the drone craze started? I think we
all considered it to be "not my problem". Now that it is our problem,
"somebody shoulda done something".

The question we should be asking and answering is: Where do we want go
from here and how do we get there?
