Holy cow "Back to the future" When we flew class 1 rudder / throttle only , the engine with up thrust was your elevator ,throttle. Up into the wind when the up line is 45 deg.add rudder and you have a barrel roll when you add rudder the leading wing adds lift and produces uthe roll moment and results in a barrel roll. Those were mid or high wing airplanes a modern pattern design would most likely require  aileron to add the roll required the rudder will provide the barrel effect
