[NSRCA-discussion] RC Pilot killed

Keith I think you fly these models too. Seems I remember something from a longtime ago.

How practical is it to design a shroud around the rotor? Would probably need to be supported from both top and bottom. Center support shaft coming through the main rotor shaft. Would the shroud depth need to be greater than at 6" or or so? For a full flight envelope?

This is so sad, but I'm truly amazed it doesn't happen more often. Though I don't know what happened in this case, these guys do unbelievable maneuvers with their heli's and often really close in. Like Ryan said they can change direction and cover an amazing amount of ground in the blink of an eye. When these guys go up at our field I always head to the pits for cover.

If you watch the YouTube video that was posted, at the end he lands the heli on what appears to be a table just a couple of feet in front of himself and two friends while they are seated. The rotor level is right about in line with their heads. Fixed wing pilots often stress staying out of the plane of the prop in case something comes off or breaks free, which I'd think would happen less often on planes than on heli's which have blades that hinge. However, the very nature of heli flight frequently puts the person in the same plane as the rotor.

Very sad, but it won't be the last.

He was a sponsored pilot on Team Align. He was flying a TREX 700 electric with carbon fiber blades (pretty the only blades anyone flies anymore).

Google his name. You can find numerous YouTube videos of him flying.

I've been told (unconfirmed) the kid was a very active heli pilot, who had been flying for several years and was highly experienced. Chances are better than 50:50 he was flying carbon blades for max performance. A low mass blade that is stiff like a knife can still do lethal damage.....

Recently we had a couple pilots bring their 700 size helis to my field. I was surprised to hear they were pushing 7500 watts through these things. That's 10 hp same as DA120 puts out

The park is well known in the NE for its heli flying and is a fairly large area. With all that room, the amazing thing to me is that when something went wrong, the heli made a bee-line for him.....Just terrible, bad luck!
