Subject: [NSRCA-discussion] World Team
I just wanted to give a little update on planning and fund raising for the team trip to South Africa. It's only 3 months away so the pressure is starting to build with regards to the trip and all the logistics. Lot's of moving parts to this trip, coordinating travel for 10 people from around the country along with 8 aircraft and all the support equipment. On the far end we have made arrangements for practice facilities, generators for charging (and a myriad of necessary adaptors), working on transportation for everyone and airplanes (did you know that rental companies will NOT…repeat NOT allow you to remove the seats from their vans??). Sadly, nobody rents Chryslers.
Anyhow, all is going well on the planning. Fundraising is going ….ok. At this point all of the low hanging fruit has been plucked and we're working hard $20 at a time. This past weekend I attended the Nat's "tune up" pattern contest in Muncie, where we held a 50/50 raffle, sold shirts, etc. We raised $80 in the 50/50, but more importantly, the contest donated it's proceeds to the team as well!! They combined last years excess with this year and presented us with a check for $900. That's HUGE and greatly appreciated. Granted, the Muncie contests are well attended, and there is no host club, so we carry the proceeds over from one year to the next, but still, it highlighted that our events do often run in the black.
I would like to ask those of you that will be running contests around the country this year to consider holding a 50/50 raffle to support the team, as well as consider donating the contest proceeds if there are any. I'm aware that many clubs want the proceeds as a fund raiser as well, but no asked, no getee :)
We really do appreciate all of the support that we've been getting. To date we've raised a little more than half which is great (that's $34,000). No one is expecting an all expenses paid trip. But we are trying to cover as much we can so these guys don't go into hock representing us. Everyone is driving their equipment to the main departing airport (yes, Andrew will be driving cross country) to save money and save transport costs. We're staying in very modest accommodations while we're there, and doing everything possible to keep the cost of this venture to a minimum.
Again, thanks for all the help and support,
Mark
