Don't feel too badly, it has happened to all of us. 
Years ago, attending my very first Nats, I was at the practice field with my (then) new Olympian. Took it apart and realized that wing retainer O-ring was still just flopping around in the fuse…never installed it. Lucky, lucky, lucky!

Wings, Ailerons, Battery secured. Write those four words somewhere on the plane so you can see them.
