We had it happen about 6 years ago at the St Charles Illinois pattern contest. Bobby had just landed and I was retrieving his plane on the runway. A dust devil twister came by and picked his Temptation off the strip about 10 feet high and planted it nose down. It then came into the pits and took a canopy up about 30 feet and over the cars in the parking lot. It was a nice clear day. Mike

We get them too, with similar results. I figure it is often a thermal that develops a vortex that causes it.

This past Saturday we had a good crowd at the field. Then all of a sudden everything started flying all over the place. A 28 lb YAK was picked up about 6 ft in the air and dropped on the ground sustaining some pretty good damage. Numerous park flyers were damaged. Luckily I didn’t have my plane with me. I would assume this is a common problem for you folks down south and out west. I’ve never seen this happen before.
