Probably need to be careful of wording, that is - using "switch" or "disconnect" synonymously. While they will both open / close a circuit, they are not generally considered the same from a safety viewpoint.
Also, from F3A Code 5.1.11: "For electric powered models, the electric power circuit(s) must not be physically connected before starting time is begun and must be physically disconnected immediately after landing."
The meaning of "physically disconnected" was discussed at the WC and the interpretation was that either the battery must be unplugged inside or outside the model - but a "switch" of some sort would not suffice. Most made the connection / disconnect inside the model, a few used external leads (similar to the external YS fuel line) with a series bullet connector. (I was uncomfortable observing helpers connecting the battery and installing the canopy, often with body parts in the prop arc, all while the radio was on with a nervous pilot on the sticks. Good luck is great.)
I've used a disconnect since day one with E and have had no issues in 3000+ flights. I just won't entrust my body parts to those darn "interrogated" circuits - had them parts a long time and would like to keep them. I don't stand in front of a running engine nor a connected motor either. But that's me.
Do we need a rule? That's what the survey - then the contest board is about. Ain't democracy grand!
