Is there something wrong with that look? I think you just described me.

A pattern plane without wheel pants looks as bad as a fat old man at the beach with a tight speedo on. Add on some black shoes and socks for a better visual. It's not right.
But hey you all should do whatever makes you happy. Have a nice day, Mike

I just stopped using wheel pants. Less weight. Less
complexity. Less hangar rash. Still haven’t found a downside . .
.

I
use Wayne’s method (found the original info on Bob’s site when it was up) with
one minor change: I found some machine screws with a large head at Home Depot. I
think they’re called “truss-head” screws. Yes they are slightly heavier (not
much I think it’s only about 1~2 grams) than a standard pan-head screw but I
like the idea of having more surface area in that area especially when attaching
to carbon-fiber gear legs. I use this method on all of my Pattern planes now.
Haven’t had a failure yet although my planes are by no means “overweight”.

Thanks, Wayne/Don....I remember how much I was impressed with
that setup, Wayne. Used it several times after; my overweight birds
benefited from the 8-32, but the 6-32 sure worked too. That was one clever
setup, Wayne! Hard to believe it was almost NINE years
ago.
I appreciate your remembering my drawing and page; those were
good days!

Thanks
Don,
I actually
used a 6/32 bolt on my wheel pants. 8/32 is stronger but I never had a failure
of the 6/32
This
drawing and description was done by Bob Pastorello after I showed him my method
at the contest in Temple that year.
Bobs
website has been down for awhile and he always had useful information on
there.

The
reference in the RC Aerobatics column in the latest AMA Magazine about Wayne’s
Wheel Pant Wizardry refers to Wayne Galligan’s method of mounting. To see
