Just keep the Cool Power 30% away from him or he will be doing that IV too.

Gary is now home. Has to do IV antibiotics for several days, but at least
he's home.

Continues to improve. Doctors are now saying it might have been encephalitis
which has symptoms similar to meningitis. He posted on Facebook yesterday,
so he is feeling better. Still in the hospital, but when I got there
yesterday, he was playing with his grandbaby in his bed.

Saw Gary around 11 am. Doing far better, eating solid food, laughing and
joking. Now the doctors aren't so sure it is meningitis because latest
tests are negative. Who knows, but he is much better.

Thought I'd been sending these to the list, but was just sending them to
myself. See below for various updates. Best news so far, he was moved from
ICU to a regular room late this afternoon (Sunday). Doing much better .

Update, Sunday:

Saw Gary this am. Still in ICU. Been off pain medication for several
hours. Still getting fluids thru a tube. Obviously feeling better, but
still has a fever that goes up and down. Won't let him drink anything
because he is still vomiting although his mom said it had been about 12
hours since the last episode. Still aches although it is manageable.

Update: Gary's meningitis is viral meaning far less contagious and less
threatening to him. He is lucid but remembers nothing of yesterday. I will
visit him in icu at 1pm cdt.

Those of you at the Nats know Gary lost his Spark (actually borrowed from
Andrew Jesky) during Sunday practice. Then he judged all week including four
rounds of fai and masters finals. He finished judging complaining of a
massive headache which we attributed to the sun and dehydration. He insisted
on going home without getting checked by a doctor, and to make a long story
short, he is in the hospital with meningitis. Drs. aren't sure if it is
bacterial or viral, but he is in bad shape at Huntsville Hospital in
Huntsville, Al. After several hours with him in the emergency room at their
satellite hospital they transferred him last nite to the main hospitals
infectious disease section. On doctor's advice, I went back to the emergency
ward and got a prophylactic dose of antibiotics because I was around him all
week. The doctor told me that other people are at low risk. They are pumping
him full of antibiotics until cultures come back and id the strain and
bacteria l vs. Viral. FWIW, symptoms are bad headache, fever with chills,
stiff neck, then extreme lower back pain. I've never witnessed so much pain.
Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers and I will update as I know
more.
