Nevermind, Alaska Daylight Time, which is 3 hours behind me.  Never ran across that before.  That explains the problem.  I think your fix of five hours earlier will fix the issue.

That may have been it.  I tried it fairly early both mornings, CDT.  The search engine says it updated at 0600 AKDT.  What the heck is AKDT???!!!

The mechanism (htdig) for updating the archives isn't very efficient and 
may be interfering with the functionality.  It looks like it's time to 
either find a new process for providing a search capability to the 
archives or reduce the frequency with with the archives are updated 
(currently nightly).  For now I've bumped the start time of the 
archiving process up 5 hours so hopefully it won't be running during 
most folks waking hours.
