[NSRCA-discussion] 15C vs 20C Flightmax batteries

I'm far from an expert on Lipo's but I'm on my 5th year of flying E. pattern so I guess I can tell you from experience. During that time I've had some success and a whole lot of failures with Lipo's.
I had decent success with Zippy 15C's but they pale in comparison to what I've been getting from the Power Unlimited's so far this season. I run a pretty aggressive power setup with the AXI 5330 F3A and I'm pulling about 80amps and over 3000 watst WOT. With a full long Masters sequence flying on the fast and large side I need a lipo that can deliver. So far the PUXFU 4900's 20C have been the best. I have 50 cycles and they are showing IR #'s in the high 1's across the packs. I pull about 4000mils on a competition flight in a moderate wind but I've had oppseee flights were I've dragged out up to 4400 twice at the Nats. They took it without a hitch.
I can't find anything else that has the light weight with the C rating I need at the lower cost of the PUXFU packs.
Batteries that have performed well are also the Rhino 4900 20C but they are too heavy for a legal weigh in for my plane. Some of the top brand name packs I owned had problems but I will say that the" top brand" has excellent customer service and they always stood behind their stuff. But they were really pricy too. Notice I didn't mention the brand.
I've come to the conclusion that power out of the motor is directly equal to what your taking out of the lipo's on a given flight. If someone tells you they are getting thru the masters pattern with 3000 mils or less they are most likely flying a conservative pattern.
I watched a lot of flying at the Nats and many of the top performers were consuming more than the 80% of capacity in their packs. Then factor in the high heat that the summers bring and it becomes even more important the you have a mil rating of 20 or more for a wide open aggressive pattern.
I have an experimental 25C PUXFU pack that weighs less than 42 ounces that has a similar if not better performance so far.
Chris and I are close friends but I would never tell people these packs weren't good if I didn't believe in them.
 Thanks, Mike Mueller

I’m running one of Chris’s 20C packs.  It weighs 1195 RTF, and has been very solid thus far.  I only have 20 cycles on it though.  These are also very compact packs…about an inch smaller than the flightmax packs.

Mike Mueller??  Any feedback?  I believe he’s been running Chris’ packs all summer.

Stupid small keypad.....

I was going to say that it looks like I'll wait on the 15Cs.

For those that need a bit more power while maintaining a low weight is there an option that is being used with success (other than TP).

Chris Moon has some at 1/2 the price of TPs...any feedback on these?

Is it typical for one to have a bunch of packs for practice and couple "super packs" for contests? At the NATs I noticed a number of guys with just 2 packs. What are your choices for those contest packs?

I do appreaciate the feedback...guess I'm trying to climb the learning curve as raplidly as possible.

Thanks

Colin.

The latest 20C packs shown on Hobby City are heavier yet, though out of stock. I don't remember the actual weight, but I think it was in the 640g range which is too heavy for me.

I flew the 15C's last year (about 60 flights per pack) and am still flying them
this year. This year I added two 20C packs to the mix. I've got perhaps 25
flights each on the 20C's.  Can't see a lot of difference between them in
flight.  The older 15C IR's (with probably 80+ flights on each) are in the 4-5
mohm range.  The newer 20C's are in the 2-3 mohm range.  I expect that the
lighter weight of the 15C's compensates for their higher IR's.  The current
20C's are not just 10 grams heavier than the 15C's.  Verne's numbers (587 vs 622
grams) are right on the money.  This is all on FAI P11 at about 65 amps max

For me the choice comes down to weight.  The lighter weight seems a bit better
trade off (in P11).  In Masters, or if I were pulling 75 amps, I would probably
go for the 20C's in the hope of better longevity.  Though since I haven't yet
even thought about retiring the 15C's, I really don't have a longevity
comparison.

Ed

I noticed that most are running the 15C 5000 packs but these seem to be in stock
infrequently. Can anyone comment on the performace of the 20C 5000s from
Flightmax.

What's the weight, performance and longevity compared to the 15Cs.

I know there must be reasons that the 15Cs are more popular....just not sure
what they are. I would have though the 20Cs would be better as someone reported
that they are only 10gms more than the 15Cs and would provide a bit more power.
Additionally I noticed the TPs are 20C...not 15C.

I'm new to the e-scene...so please ignore the ignorance.

Colin.
