In my opinion you really want to practice with packs with similar performance with which you will compete. This doesn't mean that all your packs need be "super packs", just the same or nearly so. A variant of this is maybe to keep the thumbs in shape and/or work on specific items with lower performance packs, then practice with the competition packs for a good number of flights before competitions.
Pack performance and longevity have continually improved over the last several years. It may very well be that the longevity part has improved to the point fewer packs are necessary for a season of flying. Hard to tell as it may take a long time to reach the end of life of the newer packs. I fly around 600 flights a year (5+ yrs. E pattern) and have used 10 / 12 / 15 / 20 / 30C packs. I really liked the Flightpower F3A (5350 / 5400) packs as they were light, had good capacity with sufficient C rating (16 / 20), and longevity. Unfortunately they've been discontinued and the EonX packs suitable for pattern may be too heavy for some. I've been using FlightPower EonX 4350 packs for F3A with good success, these 30C packs take a little getting used to as the performance is very strong - but I don't want to go back. I expect these to be very durable basis FlightPower reports - but again only time will tell.
Obviously FlightPower and ThunderPower are established and considered premium packs, Cris is providing a mid-price option with good power density, the real low cost packs carry some risk. I prefer to have fewer of the top line packs, but that's a personal decision for each of us.

Stupid small keypad.....
I was going to say that it looks like I'll wait on the 15Cs.
For those that need a bit more power while maintaining a low weight is there an option that is being used with success (other than TP).
Chris Moon has some at 1/2 the price of TPs...any feedback on these?
Is it typical for one to have a bunch of packs for practice and couple "super packs" for contests? At the NATs I noticed a number of guys with just 2 packs. What are your choices for those contest packs?
I do appreaciate the feedback...guess I'm trying to climb the learning curve as raplidly as possible.
Thanks
Colin.

The latest 20C packs shown on Hobby City are heavier yet, though out of stock. I don't remember the actual weight, but I think it was in the 640g range which is too heavy for me.

I flew the 15C's last year (about 60 flights per pack) and am still flying them
this year. This year I added two 20C packs to the mix. I've got perhaps 25
flights each on the 20C's. Can't see a lot of difference between them in
flight. The older 15C IR's (with probably 80+ flights on each) are in the 4-5
mohm range. The newer 20C's are in the 2-3 mohm range. I expect that the
lighter weight of the 15C's compensates for their higher IR's. The current
20C's are not just 10 grams heavier than the 15C's. Verne's numbers (587 vs 622
grams) are right on the money. This is all on FAI P11 at about 65 amps max
For me the choice comes down to weight. The lighter weight seems a bit better
trade off (in P11). In Masters, or if I were pulling 75 amps, I would probably
go for the 20C's in the hope of better longevity. Though since I haven't yet
even thought about retiring the 15C's, I really don't have a longevity
comparison.

I noticed that most are running the 15C 5000 packs but these seem to be in stock
infrequently. Can anyone comment on the performace of the 20C 5000s from
Flightmax.
What's the weight, performance and longevity compared to the 15Cs.
I know there must be reasons that the 15Cs are more popular....just not sure
what they are. I would have though the 20Cs would be better as someone reported
that they are only 10gms more than the 15Cs and would provide a bit more power.
Additionally I noticed the TPs are 20C...not 15C.
I'm new to the e-scene...so please ignore the ignorance.
Colin.
