[NSRCA-discussion] Fw: TFR Issued for Ann Arbor, MI - 5/1

It’s most likely a highly imaginative military decision based on the current
use of unmanned aircraft in military operations. Obviously, there’s a
significant difference between the Predator and other similar “models”
compared to what’s being flown at the typical R/C field, but that’s where
the imaginative part comes in. OTOH, we’ve all heard reports of suspicious
persons inquiring on learning to fly R/C.

This particular TFR is no-doubt linked to the highly publicized visit of the
President to deliver the commencement address at U of M tomorrow. Stand down
and welcome to the new terrorist world we live in.

I guess what I am struggling with is using a mechanism design for full-scale
aviation and thinking it will be effective for model aircraft. What about
the father-son (or mom or daughter) who goes out tomorrow morning to fly
something they picked up at the toy store, and would not know the AMA from
AAA or the AKC. At one extreme nothing will happen. At the other they will
be treated as a terrorist threat.

Sorry for the rant. This just seems so much like corporate management
thinking.

Has anyone ever experienced one of these issued on a contest day? How far
in advance are they issued?
