I could be wrong, but since SPA is not an AMA Pattern event I don't think
the voltage limit would apply.

Actually, that's a really good question. "Everyone" knows you can
overwatt a motor, so the motors' ratings can't be used. But, you
can't use more than AMA's limit of 42 volts, so you can put a DC
clamp meter on a battery lead, to make sure a hot battery can't push
more than about 35 amps into the ESC.
Most airplanes of that era were 7 to 7 1/2 pounds, so a limit of 1400
watts would mean the airplanes would have 187 to 200 watts per
pound. That's a pretty reasonable wattage for good performance of
those kinds of airplanes doing the maneuvers of that era.
