Would wing nuts be acceptable?  Small Parts has M6 in Nylon.  $1.26 for pack of 25.

You are correct Matt. The Shinden Thumbnuts are metric 6mm X 1.0 which is 
what I need. I checked locally and all I found was Standard. The metric ones 
in McMaster are only available in Stainless Steel, need Nylon. I have 2 
already but need 2 more.

Be careful when purchasing parts for the Shinden... Those nuts are probably 
metric...
