Hey Tommy
Glad to hear you're enjoying the E side. <g>
I have to admit to being hardheaded also, so take it from me and if you
haven't read Earl's recommendations yet go do it.
I have not followed the "cool" storage and cool before recharge
recommendations completely and I think it cost me this past year.
It's just too easy for me to leave everything in my Tahoe and fly after
work, but the daytime summer temps really hurt my batteries.

After much prodding and poking from my buddies in Louisiana, Eddie Batchelor
and
Nat Penton, I started flying electric this year and I'm just new enough at
it to be hard
headed. I can purchase eight Zippy Flight Max 4S 5000 mah lipos for what two
Flight Power lipos cost, I guess I'll find out this year how long they last.
Right now the
performance is excellent.

FlightPower has a new series of packs they're calling "Eon" and claim
greatly enhanced cycle life. I'm not aware of anybody who's used them yet or
if they're even available (the announcement came out a couple months ago). I
flew FlightPower Evo's last year with good results. When new, they made too
much power and I actually dual-rated them down to a more manageable level.
After about 50 cycles, they seemed to settle in to a more manageable level
and stayed constant for the rest of the season. I plan to buy a couple of
pairs of FlightPower Eons this spring to try out and also have available if
the Evo's start losing power. My limited experience (3 seasons) in electric
is that most packs will run strong the first year and then drop to
unacceptable levels the second, at least, that was the case with the
batteries I flew my first two years. In fairness, and I won't mention the
manufacturer, I didn't store them properly out of ignorance, so that might
be a reason, or the reason the power dropped off the second year.

OK, new subject: All my sets of batteries were close to the end of their
useful lives this last season. All are showing fairly high resistance
values and most were noticeably down on power. Shot. Kaput.
Soo.. I've got to go invest in four sets. Tru's lighter sets enable me to
make weight--but I'm not crazy about the durability with some of Orland's
experience--although they have replaced bad(slightly squishy--puffed would
be too strong a term) packs under warranty. I don't know how their larger
and higher rated packs hold up and they 'only' put me over a couple oz.
Price is pretty good.
The older Tanics I had actually held up the best over time--but the newer
ones have not--and fairly expensive--but I drive by 'em twice a day and
wave. I had a set of Kokam 4800s and they didn't hold up well either and I
think they have abandoned the larger battery market-- were/are expensive.
I'm hearing Flightpower mentioned often and wonder if they have a battery
guru that gives pattern guys a break. I never really got serious about TP
as at one time they had--as far as I was concerned--too many cells in their
packs--but perhaps it's time to re-visit.
We also had some of the original FMA 5000s and they weren't all that great
either--but may have improved with a new cell vendor.
So I'm in a bit of a quandary. Any thoughts? This should be interesting.
