Can you really read a back lighted LCD display in the sun light? I am beginning to think all cell phones are designed for inside use!

IPhone is one interesting approach. You could also use on of the <$300 7" "laptops" which have built in WiFi. Add Skype to it and another laptop on the scorekeeper's stand to send/receive voice and you could have an interesting, low cost, system. Could even put the correct maneuvers on the judges system.

We could also use an iTouch. The apps run on either, but the iTouch doesn't have 3G. Yes, the app could also announce the maneuvers thru a headset to the judge; but whose voice to use?? Hmmmmmm. . . .

Someone would have to figure out how to use the WiFi to download the scores since the iTouch doesn't have 3G. . . peer-to-peer WiFi setup with the scorekeepers laptop?

. . .or another, probably more manageable solution would be to use the USB cable on the iTouch or iPhone to download the scores. That may be an easier solution than trying to figure out how to get the app to talk over the internet or WiFi to the scorekeepers 'puter.

If we don't have guys that can write the app, I know there is a cottage industry of companies that write apps. Maybe it would be easier to hire some long-haired hippie types to write the app.

I'm interested to hear from the guys on the list that do IT stuff professionally to let me know how feasable this idea is.

  . . . back on my desktop 'puter. . .

You could have it call maneuvers, wait for a score voice captured, then
  call next maneuver.

Has anyone thought about developing an app for use while judging? I
was thinking something similar to the calculator app, but with
additional buttons to scroll thru the maneuvers. The iPhone is small
enough to hold in your line of sight as you punch in each maneuver
score, and the scores could be forwarded with either the 3G, WiFi, or
  bluetooth.

Obviously some issues would be having enough iPhone's show up at a
contest, keeping them charged thru the day, and managing the data flow
  to the scorekeeper.

Could the scores be sent back to the NSRCA web site from each
iPhone and then the scorekeeper just access a web page for the
results? Can the web site host the scoring software in this manner?

  Of course. . .
