Actually, "platinum curing" is very common method of cross linking sili
rubber. The major other alternative is peroxide curing which is just as
viable. "Platinum" is inherently cleaner process and is the method used
in medical sili rubber curing.
BTW, Platinum serves as catalyst in many chemical reactions which
produce all kinds of useful things.
