This was the briefing at the world championship a couple of years ago.  If
it's not a barrel roll and not an axial roll, it's probably a snap.  My
guess is there were few if any 0's on snaps in the semi-finals and finals in
this contest.
 
Here's my problem.  Let's say the maneuver is 45 downline snap.  The pilot
flies a small radius into the maneuver, a short line then the snap.  Let's
say the snap is textbook.  The judges look down and write the score.  I can
only assume it's a 10.  Now continuing on, the line after the snap is long
and the last radius is very smooth and large.  The judges didn't see those
elements so again I can only assume they awarded a 10 for the maneuver that
is in reality a 6 to 8.  
 
It's too bad the major contest often revolve around how the snaps are scored
and many times disregarding the other elements of the maneuver.  Maybe the
world championship briefing should be the criteria everyone uses and should
be the textbook definition.  Let your FAI rep know.

Continuing:

We can all agree what a loop looks like and all agree what an axial roll 
looks like right? The problems begin when we get into the "stalled" 
maneuvers -stalls, snaps,spins. Different planes behave and "look" 
differently in the stall therefore there cannot be one standard "look" 
for these maneuvers. Intuitively we know that different designs have 
different airfoils and each plane has different wing loadings depending 
on their weight and will stall differently. Back to aerodynamics 101 we 
know that a wing stalls when you exceed it's critical angle of attack 
and this angle does not change as far as that wing is concerned. 
Different wings will of course have differing critical angles of attack 
before they stall. So, differing wings designs must look differently as 
they will reach critical angle at different times. The only thing that 
changes is the speed at which the wing will stall if you try to maintain 
level flight while reducing it's airspeed. So, does a plane need to 
depart from it's original flight path to stall? NO. It just needs to 
pivot around the c/g to take the wing past it's critical angle of 
attack. The c/g of the airplane can absolutely maintain it's track 
through the air. The speed of the rotation in a snap or spin will 
depend on the airfoil and amount of control throws used as well as c/g 
but the key is that you do not have to leave your c/g track through the 
air to stall the wing. Period. Same for stalls at the entry to spins - 
you can fly level and reduce airspeed while increasing pitch until you 
bring the wing to and past it's critical angle of attack. This may be 
15-20 degrees of nose up attitude - not some false 40-45 degree pitch up 
designed to "show" the stall. Both wings are stalled and should count 
as stalled. Period. They may look differently, but both are stalled and 
correct. We need to get away from what "looks" right in a stalled maneuver.
