[NSRCA-discussion] Judging, was Off topic: independence day

Hi Bob,

Regarding judging and the use of flight simulators, Wayne Matthews of
the IMAC judging committee has received permission and had help I
believe, creating "perfect" maneuvers in a name brand flight simulator.
These simulator-flown perfect maneuvers are viewed on a large screen in
the judging seminar as augmentation material for the class. Everybody
likes to see them. During breaks in the seminar, people also get to fly
the sim. Its quite eye-opening (and fun) to see folks "best-effort"
against the simulator's perfect maneuver.

Thanks,

Jim

Maybe the NSRCA could fund "Judging Simulator" software, based on
current flight simulator software where it would show a plane performing
a set of maneuvers against a background and randomly add defects. You
would judge the whole flight, then the flight would be replayed leaving
lines in the path so you could see the defects and review what you saw
versus what the simulator did. It would also randomly change whether
the plane left a smoke trail for each flight.

To make it really interesting for those with lots of time, you could
judge a simulated 1/2 day session at a big event like the NATS or
Worlds. The software would post the picture of the pilot before each
flight, using some famous names and some not so famous names, and use
current aircraft images. You would review at the end of all flights.

I know the current judging video has some visuals to show geometry, but
the graphics are pretty crude compared to the latest flight simulators.

I would argue against that there "has never been a rule (in AMA) that
the 1st radii is the standard for the maneuver".

I've been judging for many years and I challenge anyone to be able to
sort through all the different radii in a Square Horizontal Eight,
decide what the "standard' radius was, how much the various radii
differed from it, assign downgrades and write a score on the
scoresheet before the airplane was in the next maneuver.

Regards also,

Ron Van Putte
