I absolutely agree. Watching pattern on TV would be almost as painful as watching.... I don't know... POKER. Someone must be watching it so maybe it is just me.
There are a lot of spectator friendly RC events, it wouldn't have to be pattern as long as it colors the sport in a positive light. I would love to be taken seriously instead of being the bastard child at the park or at the local flying field where any Johnny six pack with a bad attitude and too much time on his hands can complain about noise and get a field closed. That is why everytime I speak to someone about my hobby I tell them that the fighter pilots of the future will come from our ranks (See our friend Arch working for our country in the desert as we speak).

However, that being said, can you imagine anything more painful than watching a pattern contest on TV. A couple of minutes of coverage and interviews would be great, but actually watching the flying on TV would really be tough. You have no reference points and you would rarely see the ground. Unfortunately crashes and risk is what will draw people to watch it. No one would watch the Red Bull airraces if they made them stay at 10,000 feet. The XFC, and things like that would definitely be a much stronger television draw than pattern.

The coverage we received is great news. I know that I am preaching to the quoir here when I say, It is up to all of us to be ambassadors of the sport / hobby. On that note, I can't imagine that competing in RC is any less of a sport than Poker, and that is on ESPN all the time.

Sweet. It may be early, but we should all consider mentioning that we will be hosting the World Championships in 2011. The world will be watching...if they have to, it will be via the internet.

Dear AMA Members:
As many of you know yesterday, August 6, 2008 we took a big step forward in promoting model aviation and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
A little over seven months ago when I became AMA president, I said that I wanted to get model aviation on ESPN and yesterday we accomplished that objective! While this was a relatively short clip, and our ultimate goal still is to get feature coverage of an aeromodeling event, we now have our "foot in the door".
ESPN's daily show, "ESPN First Take," featured footage (provided by AMA member Fred Midgett who is President of High Planes Productions) of the 2008 XFC and AMA All-Star Andrew Jesky flying his helicopter. ESPN First Take, formerly Cold Pizza, is aired Monday-Friday from 10 AM-Noon ET on ESPN2.
During the segment, host Dana Jacobson mentioned that she doesn't think of model flying as a sport although she thought it was "very cool". While many of us view modeling as our hobby, there are just as many of us that describe today's aeromodeling activities as sport. Let's contact Dana, thank her for featuring model flying on her show, let her know that competing in championships such as the XFC is indeed a sport, and that we, as AMA members, would love to see more model flying on ESPN.
You can contact Dana at: espnfirsttake at espn.com
If enough of us contact ESPN, perhaps we can continue to see model flying on national T.V.
Sincerely,
Dave Mathewson
AMA President
