Wiley's son has taken over the business. I have always had good luck with the balsa but I also got to hand pick the wood as their office is only 5 miles from my home. At certain times of the year contest balsa or balsa in general is harder to get. They get their balsa in bulk orders from South America and have to weight each block to determine the weight class then saw it to size. Sometimes weight density in each block can vary and thus the variances in orders. I have found large differences in the 6lb stock. Anywhere from 4 to 6.5 lbs. in one stack of wood. He had been having a problem getting enough light balsa with each order and this may be the reason for the perceived poor service. The contest grade wood is a highly sought after item. However, they could and usually do let you know when there is a delay just like they told me.

Lone Star balsa has a good selection of other woods and specialty items, shaped pieces(l.e., trailing edge) ply in all sizes, end grain, c/fiber rod, hard woods and the list goes on.

Another very good source is KATMAR Products out of CA. Catherine has provided me with 100 pieces of 1/16x4x48 wood at a time that was all less then 6 lb. stock and I only had a few bad pieces. I don't have her phone number but you can find her listings on E-Bay under crazygambler! or KATMAR Products. She has a 100% good feedback. The wood is slightly higher in price then some place but is excellent quality.

Y'know, I always had really great service from Lone Star, but a couple of months ago I called to order stuff and I got a guy that told me they would call me back as the order taker had gone to the Post Office. Well, I never got called back and when I called again I was informed that they had "no 48" or 42" balsa and they would advise me what was available according to what was ordered. Needless to say I backed out and ordered from Balsa USA and was not as thrilled with their stuff.
I can't help but wonder if Riley sold the business as I used to like the oversized stock that I received and they were pretty good on contest grade stuff too. I'll have to try National and see how they stack up.

      Paul:
Lone Star has been fairly good. Good wood fair delivery time, except for my last order from them which has been approximately one month has not arrived yet. They said they would ship tomorrow Thursday 11/15/2007.

        Hi all,

Where is the best place to order balsa? I need balsa to sheet foam wings and build a fuse for a sport plane. Thanks in advance.
