I'm sorry to hear about this.
My opinion is that the folks with the trainer are not at fault. They asked the CD for permission and got the pin. As they didn't know about the second set of pins they wouldn't be accountable. At the same time, it doesn't appear to be your fault either. You did as you were instructed- getting the ch 56 pin that was being used for the contest.
As a CD I hate to say it but that's where the breakdown occurred here.
I have been involved with situations where local club members have shown up during a contest - even after hours - to fly. The answer has been that they can't. This is one example of why.

Normally I would accept the fact that this hobby has risks and that bad things sometimes happen. However, under the circumstances, I was wondering what you guys think.
I entered an AMA sanctioned electric fun fly today. On my second flight, I took off, turned downwind and realized I was in serious trouble. The plane remained airborne for about a minute before going straight in. The entire time I yelled "SHUT OFF 56!" After the impact, I looked down the field to where two people were trying to get a glow trainer running. I asked 56? And they replied "yes, we have the pin."
Here's the problem.there were two sets of pins. One set for the event, and the club's every-day pins. I had the event pin, he had the other one. Apparently he showed up not knowing an event was in progress. He asked the CD if he could go to the end of the field and run up his engine. As I understand it, the CD allowed this without explaining the frequency control in effect.
What's the club's liability, if any? What's the non-participant's liability, if any? Will either one be covered by AMA's property damage coverage?
Or am I at the mercy of their good moral character?
I should have gone to Muncie.
Scott
