My dad has a Groovy 50 from World Models with a YS 63. Great lower class
pattern plane. World Models also makes a 90 size version. Plug in wings,
whole top of fuse comes off for easy access to plumbing or batteries. Now
his first attempt with an E powered Groovy 50 wasn't as good as his YS glow
powered version ( his fault ) , BUT, he quickly bought another Groovy 50 and
is outfitting it with E power again. This is a 72 year old who never dreamt
of flying any low wing plane "hotter" than a Kaos. Clip 10 years off his
age and I bet he'd attend a D1 contest in Sportsman. Will he compete now ??
Doubtful, but the point is the readily available pattern ARFs in the 50 to
90 class are for real. Availability from big retailers such as Tower,
World Models, etc. play a major part. We moaned for years that there
weren't any readily available pattern ships available for the masses, well
now they're here. We need to leverage this supply. I have to plug another
pattern trainer/Sportsman plane, the Morris Hobbies Balsa Nova 120 ARF. If
you can get by the looks, this is one great flying plane. At 80" span you
need to snip a bit off each wing panel to be legal and that will help spin
and snap recovery but as is for Sportsman with a no longer in vogue YS120 or
similar powerplant, it's a great ride.

Buddy
Do you have any mixing in it? I've got a friend that wants a small pattern
type plane and I've been trying to give him some options... This is an
excellent price if it flys that well!!!!
I'm in the situation of having a bunch of local club flyers wanting to play
with pattern. I'd like to give them as many options as I can. This seems
like a really good one!
I don't know how it will pan out, or if any will make the jump to contests,
but hey, I'm game... That's how I got hooked!!!!

I have just purchased a Great Planes Reactor (the big one) to see how the
new design ARF's compare with all the old standard favorite 4-Stars,Sticks
etc.
I outfitted this $169.00 airplane with a YS-63 and used what I had for
radio equipment. This ARF is complete the only thing that you need to get it
flying is a small amount of thin CA and 30 min Epoxy and about a day to put
it all together.
This airplane will perform all pattern sequences and reminds me of my
Impact only smaller. Vertical is unlimited Knife edge is near perfect snaps
are a breeze and it stops on line every time.
You have to play with the control throws at first to tame them down since
they are very large designed for 3-D,( It's a shame that they don't make a
version with smaller control surfaces) but you can make the ones furnished
work.
The airplane weighs in at 5lbs 10 oz ready to fly and can also be built
with Electric power
For anyone who wants to try pattern this airplane will be competitive and
beats the fire out of all the old standard sport plane design's BTW Stall
turns are a piece of cake and perfect every time.
We have entered a new era where all of the ARF Mfg.'s have used what
pattern has developed, shrunk it down to make it affordable and broaden
their market and as a guarantee they added 3-D capability without destroying
what it was originally. (A Pattern Design) My advice to any beginner is
forget all of the old designs get you one of the new ARF's and the only
thing that will make you UN competitive is lack of practice.
