40 years ago, I made one, using a 24 volt secondary transformer and a  
50 ohm wirewound variable resistor.  I mounted both in a metal  
project box, with rubber grommets in the entry/exit holes.  I haven't  
seen the need to upgrade to more modern items.  Works great.
