Man I've not had this "Chevy VS Ford" HiFi arguement in decades. I love it :)

I would expect advances in that domain as well. Frequency and amplitude of the squares and rise/fall time degradation are the keys. I would argue that if technology doesn't exist today in digital (that is superior to the best analog), it will exist some time in the future. And you are right about ear response. Of course, tinnitis has settled in mine so it doesn't make a hill of beans difference to me.

But if you use light you would still be digitizing the signal which does away with the warmth of analog. However, I would argue that at some point the sample rate is going to be high enough that the human ear would not be able to perceive the difference, if I were a proponent of digital audio

Sounds like Gov'Ment job to me. Joe is sitting back, giggling, tickled pink at his Gov'ment job

If you can get an unadulterated signal to a Denon driving a pair of JBL L7's, you will get amazing HiFi. Generating an unadulterated signal is the trick and, in theory anyway, extraction with light is better than any scratched vinyl could even be, and I don't care how fine a needle you used

Yeah, I call the new guys at work who have them, "The IPOD Deaf Generation".

Shame youth today will never experience Hi Fidelity and the warmth of the sound you get from a good turntable, tube amplifier and a high end speaker system<g>

Hey Ron!
I got some great replies.
I knew I would from this great bunch of guys!
Here's one link that someone suggested:
http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/learningcenter/home/ipod/how_to_choose.html
It helped me a bunch.
Thanks to all!
