So far from this discussion it seems to me that most of the die-hard flyers
(mostly in the upper classes) don't like the idea of a one day contest. The
one day contest would seem to appeal more to someone that wants to try
pattern, ie: someone entering the Sportsman class. Why not arrange it so
that a two-day event will have two one-day contests (maybe three rounds each
day) for just the Sportsman class, and all other classes will be the
standard two-day format.
 
Just a thought to throw out on the table.

Well you're kind of in luck. Most Pattern Primers ARE one-day events. Since
you'll be flying in the Sportsman class, you can "compete" in a Pattern
Primer (usually only 401 & 402 are flown at a Primer). You'll get your feet
wet with a minimum amount of impact on the family. Pattern Primers are good
because you get the feel of competition but you also get a lot of help from
the experienced pilots. Go to a few of those if you can.
