Ron, I would have to agree...the commute would have to be around an hour
to make a 1 day worthwhile assuming 4 rounds of flying. I like to fly at
contests the more the better. Assuming 20 pilots in attendance I like
to fly 6 rounds + a couple of practice flights or I feel I didn't get
a full contest. I've got spoiled to attending contests with 6 to 10
masters flyers in attendance.... (usually 15 to 21 pilots total in the
Midwest). Anyway, its worth it to me to plan for 2 days and a 3 to 6
hour commute for the opportunity to compete with, (and learn from) them.
(Some guys travel even farther to make that happen).

I do think the idea of 2 1-day contests for sportsman sequences is an
excellent idea...(doesn't add significantly to the time and would BUILD
pattern....get em hooked!!!! )

My problem with one-day contests is that it isn't even a one-day
contest for competitors who have to drive several hundred miles. The
average distance I drive to a contest is 310 miles. It takes about
five hours. If it is a two-day contest, three, four or five rounds
can be flown on Saturday and one or two on Sunday, resulting in
approximately a 2:30 P.M. departure time for the return home.
However, for one-day contests, there's still that desire to get home
reasonably early in the evening. In order to do that, you'd have to
cut a round or two off the Saturday total.

I would drive 50 miles to a one-day contest, but not much further.
