[NSRCA-discussion] FAI pilots

Its actually not to bad IF you organise it with the airline before you get on ( that's my experience anyway) The Tx was fine, even on international flights-so long as it could not be energised, they insisted the battery was removed and taped in bubble wrap. The same for the 'model' battery. Qantas is actually very good and seems to have some guidelines for us aero modellers-IF you do not follow them, then its at your own peril!

We also had to sign a stat dec confirming we had 'flushed' all tanks and motor etc, which is easily done before you leave and with a little hassle after the comp when you are stuffing everything back into a model box. I always like to remove engine etc and check it through in the luggage-but that is to simply remove 'mass' from the model. Remembering that some of the biggest and baddest Gorilla's are going to hurl that box of yours around the place!!

Also, if going international we had to make real sure the models were super clean ( wheels etc) This was very important when getting back in to the country. Usually the fields you fly at are in a rural area and quarantine will want to know about that( not an issue domestically, obviously)

The biggest problem is making the 20kg limit-it requires some creative packing or a BIG wallet for excess baggage! I stuff all my clothes around the model and then, once packed, go to the airport a few days before to weigh in-then its usually a quick re-pack to chuck out that heavy pair of undies<G>
Everything else is carry on in the Tx box-and then you better make sure you really need it. If there is more than one of you going somewhere, share the gear. You only need 1 screwdriver, glow driver etc

If I make it to a comp in the US sometime, just make sure you stand well upwind of me after day #2 <VBG> I usually find a laundry by day# 3!

That's my experience thus far.

Tom

I flew down to the Tangerine (in it's former twilight of fame) prior to
1999...but I'm curious what putting an airplane crate on to a commercial
airline would be like in this new secure day and age. We carried our
transmitters as carry on luggage... I'm guessing that wouldn't "fly"
anymore.
