[NSRCA-discussion] safe home/trailer

I think the best thing we need to do first is to make sure the batteries are
in the safest place we can put them. Fact is the best charger/sensors or any
other device made by man/woman can and will fail.

I have been selling insurance for 20 years now and I have had maybe 10 or 11
total house fires and all of them but one (Lighting) could have easy been
prevented. A $2.00 cinder block and a .50 bag of sand is the best insurance
you can buy.

I am new in using LiPo. I started with small foamy just to learn about
e-power. I am using the Elite Charger that monitors the battery temperature.
I bought the sensors and I am using when charging the LiPo. The sensors shots
down the charging if the temperature goes over a set point. My question to
the experts: Is the temperature sensor safe to monitor LiPO charging? I am
charging only at the field on my trailer. I put the batteries over a ceramic
title. Now I am using 640 mah batteries but planing to use 2100 mah in my new
Brio. After watching those tapes looks like I need to get something better to
place the batteries. Probably I need to install a fire place in my trailer.
Better ideas?

I don't think that many guys out there seat down and watch the charging
process. We can get distracted very easy. It is really boring to keep
looking a battery charging. The industry has to come with better ideas to
monitor this process and do something intelligent automatically to prevent
accidents. I think temperature sensors is a good idea.

I feel much better about being fully invested in 3 - OS 140RX's, pipes and
headers. I'll wait till the battery technology gets a bit safer and more
idiot proof. No doubt the future is E power, just not yet for me. We've had
a few Lipo incidents at the local field while charging, thankfully no major
damage. It seems charging is the critical time, has anyone heard of or seen a
Lipo failure while in use or sitting unused ??

Maybe this is a good time to share these videos - if you haven't seen them
they are well worth watching. Look on the left side of the bottom of the main
page.

Lipos fires 1,2 & 3

http://www.utahflyers.org/

I have become a bit of a lipo safety nazi lately - ever since I had my first
lipo fire a couple of months ago.

I have been using lipos since the early days. I'm a smart guy with a
background in electronics and all things electrical. I am known as "Electric
Larry" at our field. I teach other people how to do electrics and what NOT to
do. I'm the go-to guy in our club. In spite of all that - I had a major lipo
fire a couple of months ago that destroyed almost all my RC gear and planes
and came very close to burning down my house. It was 100% my fault. I was
doing too many things at once and had become casual/careless in my care of
lipos. I had gone YEARS with no issues at all and had gotten complacent.

My equipment and charging routines are now 100% improved.

Be careful guys.

Larry
