An update. According to Castle Creations, when the ESC shuts down on an over current condition, it only shuts down the motor, not the BEC. Of course it still remains that I had a massive unknown failure where the ICs floated off of the PC board which would negate any "normal" shutdown.

That was my thought as well. The Hyperion motor I am using pulls 30 amps with a 10x5E, and about 35 amps with a 11x5.5E. The 10x5 is adequate for pattern work.
