[NSRCA-discussion] Painting

I used one of the suction Harbor Freight touch up guns to paint a plane.
Results were good. However, because of the suction, you must mix up MUCH
more paint than you need to do the job, so that the suction tube never sucks
air from the mix can. Also, if you try to paint using only a little bit of
paint mix, if you tip the gun at any angle, the suction tip will suck air
and you'll spit out plane instead of spraying a pure mix.
I would bet that within 1 or 2 paint jobs, a gravity feed gun will pay for
itself in saved paint. Ken told me one time that he uses syringes and
tablespoons to mix the small amount of paint needed for our planes. Get a
gravity feed gun if you can.
Thanks,
Jim

I have been using a Harbor Freight HVLP touch-up gun for painting my models
with PPG Concept paints. They work great. The one I use comes with a
pressure regulator. I have an in line moisture eliminator (desicant type)
that I also bought from Harbor Freight. So far after painting some ten
planes, the gun works fine. I do break down the gun after each painting
session and clean the needle, spray nozzle and interior of the gun area
where the paint enters from the cup.
One word of caution. Eventhough the spray gun is HLVP, the overspary gets
on everything. I paint outside under my breezeway. It is a good idea to
wear at least a air mask. I use the cartridge type. Also don't let your
cars be down wind of the spray fumes. One of my cars was parked some 50
foot away and still managed to get some overspray on it.

I'd use the standard just because I don't have experience with HVLP.
I have a $25.00 import automotive touch-up gun and a high buck ($150-$200)
Binks touch up gun I use to spray airplanes. I can't tell the difference in
them. Buy one from Harbor Freight or similar outfits and use at 35-50 psi
(depending on material) with your compressor. I think the touch up guns are
easier to use than an airbrush you can get through a lot quicker.

I have a compressor. I do not have a spray gun yet. From my understanding
there are 2 types of guns "Standard and HPLV". Which is "better or easier"
to use?

The secret is in the paint. Concept is so good you can do a great job even
with a cheap external mix airbrush like the the one Harbor freight puts on
sale for less than $5. If you use one of those make sure you regulate the
air pressure to 20 pounds or less. Practice on old milk jugs and plastic
containers. The down side is that you will have to hurry with the airbrush
but the small paint container will help you keep the weight down. The paint
will weigh the same in the can as it does on the airplane.
Don't get the idea you can sand Concept off and do it again. Sanding Concept
is something to avoid!
