Not a chance. There are far more/better ways to reduce weight than trying to
paint flying surfaces instead of using iron on covering. Ask me, I can tell
you what is the lightest AND most durable stuff you can put into one of
these planes.  I don't even want to think of the hours I spent weighing
screws, washers, servo arms, etc.  By just spending about $200 you can
lighten your OS 140RX over 2 ounces !!  Who said pattern was expensive :).
I built a 1090 sq in ( wings are over 500 squares each ), old school
fiberglass fuse with wood crutch from firewall to tail post, EMC2 at 4788
grams, just a few grams over 10lbs 8oz.  It still has a brand F synthesized
rx, 5 cell 1100mah nimh battery pack, 16oz tank, wheel pants, aluminum
landing gear and 2M pattern plane size digital servos.  A CF ( ES ) gear
over the Hanson 7075 aluminum gear is only a 12 gram savings if you are
wondering.  My next EMC2 will be lighter by molding my own fiberglass canopy
( current plane has a plastic canopy ), lighter motor mount and the ES CF
landing gear.  Target weight is 10lbs 5oz.  With all these composite fuse
planes around, it should be very easy to build one at under 10lbs with baggy
coat wings. Of course it you want to crowd the 11lb limit, go ahead and
paint.  At the size flying surfaces we have, unless you just have to have a
20 foot finish, iron on covering is the way to go.
