Barye,

Speed is NOT a judged criterion. Smoothness and grace are. 

Flight speed could either help or hurt the pilot in regard to his ability to 
execute in a smooth and graceful manner. The slower speed of an electric plane 
hurts some pilots more than it helps in my experience judging the highest 
levels of competition, due to inability to keep the thing smooth and graceful 
especially in wind. Some models simply fly better at higher pace but, in a 
similar vein, excess speed also hurts the same type of pilot. 

It's a question of managing the speed you have to achieve other requirements. 
If a judge scores speed, then that judge is wrong
