At our local contest we allow planes up to 26 pounds in sportsman. It is up to the cd to put the weight waiver in his sanction applications.
So ask the CD.

The CDs at our local contests have made it known that they will allow
any airplane that meets the AMA national safety code to fly in sportsman
just to encourage new blood. We're specifically trying to hook the
newer pilots and IMAC junkies ;-)
Point is, it's definately worth asking the CD.
