Mid-airs are never fun, but I witnessed a sequence of
events last night that made everybody laugh, even
those directly involved.
Two airplanes were in the air at the local club, both
electrics. One was a small Extra, the other a 90 size
electric Funtana. I was packing up for the evening
when I heard that all-too-familiar WHACK, I looked up
in time to see both planes kind of waggling as the
pilots tried to regain stable flight. The larger
Funtana was flying as if nothing happened, but the
small Extra now had extra dihedral in the wing.
Fearing a spar failure, we told the pilot to get down
ASAP. He made a nice touchdown on the grass, and
except for the bent wing it looked ok. We were so
focused on helping the Extra get down safely we did
not notice the other pilot, also fearing damage, was
on a landing approach. As fate would have it, his
approach was the same and the Funtana whacked the
small Extra again to really finished the job and put
it out of its misery. Unbelievable, our field is a
400' square, it would be hard to hit something on
purpose.
