That's a perfectly reasonable answer, as I see it. If there is to be a domestic manufacturer, it will have to happen at the high-end of the market.

I don't like to get into discussions of buy American vs. Foreign.  I generally evaluate the best bang for the buck provided the quality meets my needs.  I am willing, and usuall do pay a premium for quality, service and reliability.  For RC pattern, I have always done this when I buy my high end radios, engines and now electric motors.  We spend a lot of $ to support our pattern habit.  I'll gladly put domestic products in the mix when they stand up to the competition.

Why isn't there a domestically made engine for Pattern ... there was almost a K&B 150 (really a 140) and it was a sweet runner, until Lockhart's two irreplaceable prototypes were utterly  worn out.
Maybe RJL could be helped along.
I just had a talk with Bob Boucher at Astro-Flight, about the requirements for a Pattern E-motor, and he was receptive.
Already, Steve Neu makes what look to be suitable motors, though I don't have any track record on their Pattern useage.

Well,  here's the problem I see it.

We want to earn top $.  But want to pay nothing - and still get it all.  Cannot support an economy, domestically, on that theory.   

Another good one is "Quality, price, service...   choose any two"

My business - manufacturing in Phx Az - was killed by NAFTA.

I doubt if there is a consumer product of any value that is truly "American Made". GM may have assembly plants in the US, but I'd wager that half the content (parts) come from china, mexico and india.
