[NSRCA-discussion] Airplane Rack

Hi all,

I'll have it at the Nats again this year, even if I fly there (vs
driving like I did two years ago). Two years ago I had it in my
Odyssey, last year I had it in the Grand Caravan I rented (worked
fine in it too).

The legs are 1" dowel stock as is the rear cross piece (covered with
foam tubing) that the tail rests on. The dowels are counter bored ~
1" deep into the 1-1/2" square wood rails that run fore and aft on
each side. The only fasteners are the #6 machine screws holding the
metal channel to the side rails (note the wing nuts on the bottom).
The rack is held down by a pair of rubber bungies through a pair of
screw eyes mounted in the bottom of each rail and looped through the
rear seat support. The black plastic you see on the steel channel is
door panel trim edging material from a body shop to provide some
protection from the sharp edge of the metal.

The additional piece of padded dowel shown is to raise the horizontal
stabilizer of the second plane up over the stab of the first plane.
The cable ties were just a quick way to hold it in place. Not very
elegant, but effective none the less. I'll eventually come up with
something better but this works for now.

Derek Koopowitz asked me to write a K-Factor article on it. I agreed
to do so, AFTER my taxes are done. When I do write the article I'll
make available a downloadable CAD drawing for those who want more
detail about how it's built. It's really pretty simple.

Thx, Jerry
