[NSRCA-discussion] SODA BOTTLE FUEL TANK

I've not made any smart comments in a while SO here goes.

<That's almost a pound of fuel the airplane must be a light weight.>

That'd be closer to a pound and a half. Last time I looked a pound was 16oz
(454Gm). SOOO that 33oz bottle that is now 24ozs (full) would be more like
a pound and a half, down from the original 2.06pounds it started life as. Of
Course if we're gonna get that serious we'd hafta talk about the specific
gravity of the fuel - so I'm kinda out on a limb with this

But since most of us do take off with a full tank (except those electron
guys) Can you feel the difference in a 2m plane changing weight well over a
pound, even if it's located on the CofG. At my level of experience,
especially since I've not touched the sticks since Hurricane Rita, I'm not
gonna voice an opinion. You guys tell me.

Eddie

I was getting ready to update my experiment with the 33 oz coke bottle
filled with fuel 30%. I let it sit and shrink for 2 months, then when it
appeared to stop shrinking I removed the fuel and carefully measured the
volume. The bottle started life as 33 oz,1 liter and now holds 24 oz liquid.
Which is perfect for a thirsty 160 DZ with a 4 blade prop.I have it in my
Smaragd and will fly (test) tomorrow. Should work fine and no more
shrinking.

FYI... I had a conversation with a flying friend the other day about the
soda bottle fuel tanks and the way they shrink. He happens to work for
Pepsi and explained to me that the bottles are blow molded. He said if they
are not used with in a certain period of time that the memory in the plastic
takes over and they will shrink in size and then they have to discard the
old bottles. The carbonized soda keeps the shape of the bottle till used.
He said that most likely the nitro content speeds up the process and could
explain why some of you using them with higher then 15% nitro are
experiencing this phenomenon.
So.... drink another one.... rinse and fill.

Wow Jim

That's almost a pound of fuel the airplane must be a light weight.
